Harvest set to be completed as good weather makes a comeback

FARMERS are expected to complete the harvest over the coming days with the help of anticipated fine weather.

However, the production level will be back, according to estimates from Teagasc, which is predicting an output of 1.9 million tonnes, down 4.2% on 2009.

Irish Farmers Association Grain Committee chairman Noel Delany said up to €155/t (at 20% moisture, excluding VAT) is achievable on deals for green barley with €10 over for wheat.

“Despite some harvest pressure on the continent, green grain prices have continued to harden, moving closer to imported values.

“Overall yields are coming in 0.3 to 0.5t/ac below expectations leading to competition especially where farmers are prepared to shop around.”

Mr Delaney said inter-farm sales have increased as the trade raised compound feed prices twice since June, with further price hikes in the pipeline. Imported wheat and barley prices, while easing in recent days, are ranging from €190 to €195/t for barley and wheat respectively.

“With weather expected to improve over the weekend, grain moistures should improve allowing easy on farm storage.”

Mr Delaney said sourcing from neighbours can deliver significant savings to farmers on transport costs alone.
