PEOPLE are expressing less extreme positive views on the need to save and are more optimistic about economic conditions.

This is according to the latest Nationwide UK (Ireland)/ESRI savings index for May which showed consumer sentiment towards savings fell for a second month.

More than half of respondents said that if they had spare cash they would use the money to pay off debts including their mortgage.
