Ms Maher takes up the position with immediate effect, following the recent appointment of the newspaper’s chief executive, Tom Murphy, as interim chief executive of the Irish Examiner’s parent company, Thomas Crosbie Holdings.
A key member of the newspaper’s senior management team since she joined the company as head of marketing in 2001, Ms Maher has played an integral role in the Irish Examiner’s development, working closely with the chief executive and the management team. Commenting on her appointment, Mr Murphy said he was delighted to be appointing someone with “tremendous ability, a highly-developed understanding of the business, and the talent, drive and energy to lead the organisation and its staff in what are challenging times for virtually all companies”.
“Mairead has worked very closely with all of the key people in the newspaper and has a great appreciation of what is needed to continue to nurture, develop and grow a wonderful newspaper brand,” said Mr Murphy. Ms Maher said she is looking forward to the challenges she faces in her new role. “We are a great team here, very proud of the newspaper we work for and passionate about what we do,” she said. “These are the type of attributes that will help us come through the recession with a better newspaper and strong online products.”
The interim chief executive said that working in close collaboration with the other TCH companies, she hoped to achieve greater convergence of media platforms to maximise the potential of the Irish Examiner brand, in what is an exciting, challenging and rapidly-changing era for media organisations worldwide.
Prior to joining the Irish Examiner, she worked for Dairygold Co-op and Carbery Milk Products in various senior roles. Married with three young children, Ms Maher, 39, is a business graduate of University College Cork.
