BOTH of the main Irish banking stocks closed yesterday on an upward trajectory, at the end of a week which had been dominated by talk of their future stability.

Both AIB and Bank of Ireland’s share prices continued to fall further in early trading yesterday, following their trend for most of the past couple of weeks, but both eventually closed marginally up.

AIB — which earlier this week was rumoured to be a potential takeover target for the Spanish banking giant Santander — was up by 2.87%, or 3c, at €1.08.
