SALES of Mexican beer Corona have soared by 30% in Ireland over the last year, with its distributor saying it “has a life of its own”.

Michael Barry of Cork-based Barry & Fitzwilliam said although trading has been “very tough” recently, more bottles of Corona are sold in Ireland than anywhere else in Europe. He said sales in Ireland are equal to five bottles of Corona per person a year.

Sales of Jagemeister were up 10% in the first quarter of 2010 on the previous year, while wine sales are flat.
