Commission invites public to vote online for organic farming logo
Agriculture and Rural Development Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel said the Commission wants to ensure through the online vote that the new logo appeals to as many people as possible.
“At the same time, this open selection process contributes to the bigger objective of making people aware of the importance of the organic farming sector,” she said.
A total of 3,422 design and art students from all over Europe submitted their innovative proposals for the logo
After the competition closed, an internationally renowned jury took the competition to the next stage by selecting the final three logos.
These can be viewed until January 31 on http://ec.europa.eu/agriculture/organic/logo/index.htm which will host the online vote.
Unlike the current logo, the winning entry will be obligatory for all pre-packaged organic products that derive from the 27 EU member states and meet the labelling standards.
Writing in her blog, Mrs Fischer Boel said the Commission wants this logo to reflect what Europeans think about organic farming. It is not just a logo for the organic producers or the supermarkets and distributors.
“This is a logo for all Europeans interested in organic farming and sustainable food choices. So I really hope that they will let their voices be heard,” she said.
Ms Fischer Boel said hundreds of logos were shortlisted and reviewed. Those who made it through to that stage will have received a letter.
