Mid-west became ‘unemployment blackspot’ following Dell closure

THE initial loss of 2,000 Dell jobs has led to another 4,000 workers joining the dole queue in Limerick, said businessman and Mid-West Task Force chairman Denis Brosnan yesterday.

This overall figure of 6,000 jobs lost has made the mid-west one of the darkest spots for unemployment in the country said Mr Brosnan, who chairs the task force established by the Government in response to Dell’s move to Poland.

Mr Brosnan said: “All of Ireland is suffering, but the mid-west is having a horrific time between job losses and probably the worst tourist season we have had for decades.”
