MANUFACTURING output could be higher this year than in 2008 but it is being driven by multinationals while home-based industries struggle.

The volume of manufacturing output fell by almost 14% on an annual basis in August, following an increase of 8% the previous month, according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

But the volume was up 3.6% in June, July and August and industrial output was up 3% when compared to the preceding three- month period.
