‘Young farmers can inspire others to adopt best farming practice’
That’s the view of Macra na Feirme president Michael Gowing, speaking ahead of the 11th annual FBD Young Farmer of the Year Competition, run by Macra in partnership with the IFA (Irish Farmers’ Association). The final will take place in the Breaffy House Hotel, Castlebar, Co Mayo on Monday and Tuesday with entrepreneur and Dragons Den star, Sean Gallagher, chairing the final adjudication panel.
Entrants are judged according to a number of criteria including farm business initiative and innovation, levels of farm efficiency and enterprise quality, farm safety and environmental protection awareness, as well as agricultural knowledge and community involvement.
Mr Gowing, a former winner of the competition in 2003, said the country’s top young farmers are implementing both good agricultural as well as environmental practices.
They are also maintaining rigorous standards on their farms. They invest time and are dedicated to their industry.
“This competition recognises their sheer hard work. We must not forget the contribution our young farmers make to our country’s well deserved reputation for excellence,” he said.
County rounds of the competition took place in June and July with 26 young farmers making it through to the final.
The top prize is a specially commissioned sculpture by Irish-based artist Aileen Anne Brannigan, a travel bursary worth €2,500 and €1,000 spending money.
Second prize is a travel bursary of €1,000 plus €500 spending money, while third prize is a travel bursary of €500 plus €250 spending money.
