Cork firm wins Home Office grant to develop mobile phone theft solution
Yougetitback.com was chosen as one of four winners of the Mobile Phone Security Challenge, part of Design Out Crime, an initiative from Britain’s Home Office’s design and technology alliance against crime and the design council.
The company, with partners Data Transfer Communications and PDD, were one of four teams awarded £100,000 to develop a solution to combat mobile phone theft.
The winners were chosen by a panel of Britain’s most respected experts and included representatives from Vodafone and Nokia.
Chief executive of Yougetitback.com, Pat Lynch, said to have beaten off stiff international competition was a huge success.
“This is a major success for a Cork company, winning this against such major international competition.
“Yougetitback is opening new markets every month and has built the foundations for a very successful company,” he said.
Co-founder and head of sales, Paul Prendergast, said: “This is a major achievement for the team and underlines the strength of our technology and solution.”
“Coupled with out laptop service, we are confident our anti-theft solution is unique and provides a very real solution to a growing problem to business, government and consumers.”
Mr Prendergast said the award provided a great foundation for the company to build on.
“We are a small company of only nine people but it shows that with the right people and the right technology you can pretty much do anything. By the end of the year, we hope to be selling into 10 or 15 countries and people are coming to us now which is great.”
The winning teams will be tasked with developing new ways of securing mobile phone handsets, the data they contain, and their future use as electronic wallets when m-commerce (mobile commerce) technology is introduced.
They aim to produce solutions which will be showcased and promoted in early 2010, with a view to rapid market take-up.
