Volkswagen dealership set to create 80 jobs in Cork

On the back of being appointed the new Volkswagen and Volkswagen Commercial dealer for Cork city, Blackwater announced a €5 million capital investment to develop a new facility in the city.

Despite the tough economic environment the company expects that the dealership will result in the creation of 80 jobs by 2012.

Established by David Quirke and Denis Murphy in 1993, the group has become one of the largest Volkswagen dealers in Ireland through its Fermoy dealership.

Until the new €5m investment is complete the group is operating from a temporary facility at Victoria Cross in the city.

This facility will be used until the new state-of-the-art dealership is constructed in 2012.

The new facility will give Blackwater Motors a central presence within the city.

The dealership is also very close to concluding an arrangement for its after-sales facilities, including service workshop and parts department, and hopes to announce details of this arrangement in the coming months.

Commenting on the appointment, Philip Sheridan, Volkswagen brand director, said: “The motor industry is going through an unprecedented period at the moment.

“However, we firmly believe that we must invest now to be in the best possible position when the industry recovers.

“Blackwater Motors is one of the best known and respected dealerships in the country and their experience in Cork and indeed in the motor industry will no doubt be of great benefit to Volkswagen now and in the future,” he said.

Co-founder Denis Murphy said: “The appointment will allow us to create economies of scale which will deliver increased competitiveness and enhanced customer satisfaction standards in the city.”

The appointment fulfils one of the company’s medium-term expansion objectives and its faith in the Volkswagen brands encouraged them to open this dealership despite the current economic uncertainty, he said.

“The investment of €5m underlines our confidence in both the Volkswagen brands and in a strong recover of the motor industry.

“This investment willsecure the employment of 80 people when the new facility is opened and we are confident of the long term success of Blackwater Motors in Cork,” added Mr Murphy.
