Renowned banker to be honoured

The Richard Cantillon Summer School in Ballyheigue, Co Kerry, from July 15-17, is being promoted by Kerry County Enterprise Board and Ballyheigue Community representatives.

Many leading academics are expected to be present to acknowledge Cantillon’s contribution to economics.

Cantillon, born in 1680, was a banker most famous for his work, Essay on the nature of commerce in general, published in French in 1755.

It is in this essay that the first known use of the term “entrepreneur” is found.

Cantillon is quoted by Adam Smith in his work, Wealth of nations.

A commemorative plaque will be unveiled in the seaside town.

The school programme will continue over the following two days and it will include workshops, debates and lectures featuring academics including Prof Brian Lucey of Trinity College Dublin.
