HALF of the problems Ireland now faces are “our own making” and not solely the fault of banks and builders.

This is according to Ulster Bank chief economist, Pat McArdle, who said that the Irish economy is like a diver who has reached the bottom of the swimming pool.

“We are down amongst the bubbles but at least we are no longer plunging.”
