UCD team in research bid aimed at boosting soil fertility and quality

RESEARCHERS in UCD are establishing how to incorporate food waste into soils, to boost soil quality and fertility.

They hope it will be successful as a soil improver and stabilisation agent – because it would be an ideal destination for much of the 900,000 tonnes of organic waste which Ireland disposes to landfill every year.

The EU Landfill Directive stipulates that by 2012 such waste can no longer go to landfill.
