27th European Reversible Ploughing Contest to be held in Ireland next year
It will be hosted by the National Ploughing Association and will see 30 competitors from 15 countries taking part.
Delegations from each of the participating countries will also travel to Ireland for the event which will be held at a venue to be announced.
This year’s competition will be held in Zabreh town in the Czech Republic at the end of September.
The NPA said it is looking forward to hosting the prestigious event in 2010 in conjunction with the national championships.
Meanwhile, plans are going ahead for this year’s national event, which will be held in Athy, Co Kildare, on September 22-24 next. The first ever national ploughing championships were held there in 1931. It has hosted the event on two other occasions (1955 and 1985).
A new promotional brochure sponsored by Bank of Ireland has already been launched for what is one of Europe’s largest agricultural festivals. It will feature 17 national finals, 300 ploughing competitors from every county and a five-nations contest.
An exhibition arena is expected to take up a large section of a 100-acre grass field, with roadways on both sides and extensive lands in close proximity for working machinery demonstrations.
NPA managing director Anna May McHugh said the Fennin Farm on the Stradbally Road is an ideal location.
“The land is extremely good. The site is excellent and very accessible. All these factors should make this year’s event an extremely successful one,” she said.
May 29 is the closing date for the submission of completed booking application forms for trade stand space.
Meanwhile, John Whelan, New Ross, Co Wexford, and Daniel O’Dwyer, Tullyroan, Co Kilkenny, have joined the NPA board of directors.
Mr Whelan is an accomplished ploughman, having competed at world level on four occasions, while Mr O’Dwyer is an experienced NPA member and supervisor at national events.
