Petition to wind-up Cork bar firm

A PETITION to wind-up the company which operates some of Cork’s best-known pubs was lodged yesterday.

The petition to wind-up the Cork-based Rebel Bar Company Ltd, and which was lodged by entrepreneurial pub owners Tom Scriven, Sam Scriven and James O’Leary, will be heard on April 27 next.

The move is the second and final part of a process which began on April 3 when Kieran Wallace of KPMG was appointed provisional liquidator of the company.

The Rebel Bar Company employs up to 145 people. It manages and leases more than 20 premises in Cork, including Manhattan and Mulligan’s in the city, Oscar Madison’s in Kinsale and Sam’s Bar in Ballincollig.

Other pubs under the group’s banner include the Beer Garden Bar in Turner’s Cross; the Castle Bar in Carrigtwohill; Instinct Bar in O’Sullivan’s Quay; Lakelands Bar & Off-licence in Mahon; and the Savoy on St Patrick’s Street.

Some premises have had to close temporarily in order to secure licensing.

Other bars in which the company holds a leased-out interest remain unaffected. Tom Scriven last night reiterated that the appointment by the directors of a liquidator was to protect jobs into the future. He also gave a strong assurance to the staff that every effort would be made to secure their employment.
