THE three candidates for the presidency of Macra na Feirme set out their stalls at the first of a series of countrywide hustings in Carlow last night.

Candidates take to the hustings in bid to be Macra’s next president

Seeking election as the 32nd president are Michael Gowing, Kilminchy, Portlaoise, Co Laois; Flor O Gorman, Imokilly, Co Cork, but from Kilbeg, Tallow, Co Waterford; and Tom Quirke, Lissavalley, Barnaderg, Tuam, Co Galway.

Michael Gowing, the current national chairperson, who is a dairy and beef farmer, said his goal as president would be to have an increasing, vibrant active organisation.

“I would relish the opportunity, to ensure that every member of Macra benefits in full from their membership,” he said.

Flor O’Gorman, a farmer and current Munster vice president, said he firmly believes participation is the key to the success of any organisation and Macra is no different.

“Being an active member of Macra for many years has given me the self belief and confidence to stand for election. As president of Macra na Feirme, I can deliver that same belief and confidence to the members,” he said

Tom Quirke, a financial controller and part time farmer, who is the current north-west vice president, said as a full time president he would provide the experience and leadership qualities to see Macra through these recessionary times.

Candidates for Macra vice presidents will also address the hustings over the next three weeks.

Ballot papers must be returned to Macra head office in Dublin by 1 pm on April 8, when the counting of the votes will begin.
