CASH could be extinct in five years, according to a survey released by Halifax.

One in four people think we will have a cashless society in the future, with almost half expecting it to happen in the next five years. Despite this a ration of three-to-one people saying they use cash instead of the card.

The most popular items purchased with cash are clothes (71%), groceries (68%) and petrol (58%).
