A DECISION to abandon attempts to restart the world trade talks in Geneva will be welcomed in Ireland.

Fears had arisen that the talks which broke down in July, to the relief of the Irish farm lobby, would resume this weekend.

But the World Trade Organisation (WTO) head Pascal Lamy has decided there is not enough consensus among major economies to call new ministerial talks on a deal.
