Champion of Champions awards recognise top cattle breeders
An award was made to the highest Economic Breeding Index (EBI) dairy cow and also to the highest Suckler Beef Value (SBV) beef cow based on the autumn 2008 Irish Cattle Breeding Federation index listings.
The Irish Holstein Friesian Association Award nominee was Richard Whelan, Enfield, Co Meath, with Lumville Danoise 2, winner of the Baileys Championship in August and runner-up at the Holstein World Conference.
Denis Downing, Grenagh, Co Cork, won the EBI Award with Morisheen SPW Audeen, a pedigree Holstein Friesian GP 83 cow.
Well-known Charolais breeder, Patsy McCabe, Ardee, County Louth was the Irish Charolais Cattle Society Award nominee while William Smith, Oldcastle, Co Meath, was the Irish Limousin Cattle Society Award nominee. His cow Millbrook Ulla has featured highly at numerous events.
The Irish Angus Cattle Society nominee was the Appelbe Family, Clonakilty, Co Cork. This year’s winner, Carrigroe Lady Jane was shown with her heifer calf, a daughter of last year’s winning bull.
Peter and Marion O’Connell, Mallow, Co Cork, were the Irish Simmental Award winners with Raceview Nicolette Beauty, the breed’s overall national champion.
Cavan breeder Sean McKiernan, Corlesmore, received the Hereford award.
The Irish Belgian Blue Cattle Society award recipient was its breeder of the year, Jarlath Duggan, Rathdowney, Co Laois, who won the breed’s calf champion title with Ross Beaver and the overall breed championship with Ross Woodchester.
Winner of the SBV Award was Dr Roger McCarrick, Drumree, Co Meath, whose Limousin cow, Pelletstown Racquel ET was placed at the top of her breed listing in 2008.
RDS President Dr Tony Scot, who presented the awards, congratulated the champions, each if whom received a cheque for €1,000, an RDS silver medal and their breed’s RDS Spring Show trophy. EBI and SBV award winners each received an RDS silver medal and a cheque for €500.
