EU attempts to address growing problem of illegal timber imports

AROUND 19% of timber imports into the European Union are thought to come from illegal sources, but new rules proposed by Brussels aim to reduce the risk.

Timber importers will have to get guarantees that the products they are bringing into Europe are not from illegal logging.

The European Commission also wants to financially support developing countries to maintain their forests through a Global Forest Carbon Mechanism.
