COMPULSORY electronic tagging for sheep has been described as “a non runner” by the Irish Farmers Association (IFA) at a meeting of the European Parliament agriculture committee in Brussels.

IFA Sheep Committee chairman Henry Burns warned that electronic tagging will seriously damage a sheep sector already on its knees.

He said compulsory electronic sheep tagging will not work and will force the vast majority of Ireland’s 34,000 sheep farmers out of production.
