Nationwide takeover talk adds local twist

IN A week of major surprises, word that Anglo Irish Bank is considering a bid for Irish Nationwide Building Society has given the drama unfolding on global markets a definite local twist.

Nationwide takeover talk adds local twist

Newspaper reports yesterday were careful not to say takeover talks had started, because it appears that is not the case. Those reports added that Anglo has expressed interest in acquiring the building society and that talks, sounding the possibility of a bid have taken place between Anglo, the Government and the Financial Regulator. Irish Nationwide told management and workers yesterday there has been no approach from Anglo.

In a day of denials Bank of Ireland has also dismissed reports it has been targeted by Santander, the Spanish banking giant, one of Europe’s leading banks. It was not, they said, engaged in talks with any third party at this time.
