Boston Scientific to invest €50m
The spend will go on improving strategic research and development work at the site, the medical devices company’s biggest facility in the world. Established in 1994, the Galway plant employs more than 3,000 people.
The US company has said that this latest investment would probably result in extra jobs, but declined to say how many might be coming on stream and over what timeframe.
“This is one of the most significant R&D investments supported by IDA Ireland. Given the stature of the Boston Scientific Corporation, it demonstrates Ireland’s ability to win such investments internationally and demonstrates our ability as a capable knowledge based economy,” said IDA Ireland chief executive Barry O’Leary yesterday.
Finance Minister Brian Lenihan said: “This investment is extremely significant, not just for Galway but also in terms of the research and development activities in Ireland.
“Boston Scientific is a highly technologically advanced company which has to rapidly change and continually develop to remain ahead in a highly competitive industry. Its desire to locate this investment here speaks very highly of the calibre of Irish scientific talent.”
