Tánaiste strongly endorses role of agency despite fear of cuts
Recent reports speculated that the agency would have its industrial and tourism promotional roles subsumed within Enterprise Ireland and Fáilte Ireland.
However, the Tánaiste travelled to Shannon by government jet to launch Shannon Development’s annual report and give a strong statement on the role of the agency which is funded by her department.
Launching its annual report, Ms Coughlan said: “I am pleased that Shannon Development is continuing to look to the future and plan for the needs of its client and potential investors. The company’s initiative in drawing up a master plan for the regeneration of the Shannon Free Zone will ensure the zone continues to have a competitive edge as a preferred investment location.”
She said yesterday’s job announcements for the zone represented a strong vote of confidence in the facilities there and the skilled work force the zone has to offer.
The new chief executive of Shannon Development, Dr Vincent Cunnane — like the Tánaiste a native of Co Donegal — also sent out a strong message.
“The 2007 results show clearly that Shannon Development continues to deliver innovative regional development strategies and projects,” Dr Cunnane said.
“The company has a clear and challenging mandate from government and a body of staff with the expertise and the ability to deliver on that mandate. Our overriding aim is to make this region the place to life, work and enjoy, ensuring the highest quality of life, and a model for regional development that will deliver a better future for all.”
Company chairman, John Brassil said they would continue to pioneer initiatives and strategies to ensure the mid-west is equipped to meet the future needs of investors, visitors and citizens.
As part of a rationalisation programme over the past five years, the number of people employed by the agency has been reduced from 190 to 130.
