A THIRD of small firms are employing less people than a year ago as business confidence slumps to the lowest level in 20 years.

ISME, the representative body of small and medium enterprises, said two thirds of companies are less confident about business prospects than a year ago.

It also said over a third of firms have encountered cancellation of orders in the last three months.
