Hauliers demand proper rates in doomsday scenario

IRELAND could find itself without a goods transport system if hauliers don’t get what they want.

As a result of spiralling fuel costs, they are demanding proper rates for their work. If this doesn’t happen they will impose fuel surcharges on customers.

The Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA) also said unlicensed operators working outside the Department of Transport vehicle and safety rules will be named and shamed. Those using such operators will be advised of the risks to their business and the general public.

It said it is very close to a doomsday scenario adding that a close down of service by its members will bring chaos to businesses and exporters in a very short period.

“We are not threatening our own customers, but we are informing them of a ticking time-bomb and I have asked all IRHA members to meet their clients and advise them of the current crisis in our industry... and to negotiate rates that will give stability of service over the coming weeks,” IRHA national president, Jimmy Quinn said.

Over 300 hauliers from Cork, Limerick, Kerry, Waterford, Tipperary and Clare met in Cork this week to discuss what the IRHA has described as urgent and vital industry issues.

It said a media and lobby campaign will soon be rolled out to advise the general public, businesses and government of the risks to hauliers and their customers if controls and normal business practices are not enforced in the sector.

“As licensed hauliers, we have also a duty to inform our customers of operators who are taking advantage of the current fuel crisis to make short-term gains with below cost selling.”
