Vaccine trial for Alzheimer’s halted

ELAN and Wyeth have suspended a study on a vaccine targeted at a suspected cause of Alzheimer’s disease, according to the website ClinicalTrials.gov.

The vaccine is targeted at clearing buildup of plaque in the brain, a characteristic of the disease.

The study was to last two years, and was begun in November 2007 with an estimated 228 patients.

Michael Lampe, a spokesman for New Jersey-based Wyeth, said the study was halted because of skin lesions.
