FOURTH-QUARTER figures on the mortgage market provided further evidence the housing market here is in the grip of a serious slowdown.

The Irish Banking Federation and Pricewaterhouse Coopers quarterly mortgage monitor show the total value of new lending was down 15% for the full year.

2006 was exceptionally strong, however, and the comparative decline against 2005 was just 1%.
