Call for EU action on lamb sector

THE report being prepared for the European Parliament by Ireland East MEP Liam Alyward on the future of the sheep and lamb sector must set out a policy framework that will feed into the CAP health check negotiations, Meat Industry Ireland has said.

Industry spokesperson Cormac Healy said last week’s meeting between EU sheep sector representatives and the Slovenian presidency of the EU provided an excellent opportunity to advance the call for action at EU level to safeguard the industry’s future.

Mr Healy said in addition to addressing EU promotion budgets for lamb and labelling, there must be a response in the CAP health check to the challenges faced by the sector.
