THE Irish market closed in negative territory in line with other European bourses yesterday.

It dropped 279 points to 7,021 as the banking and construction stocks suffered a sharp decline.

AIB dropped 57c to €15.58. Bank of Ireland was 42c worse off at €10.17. Irish Life and Permanent and Anglo finished 90c and 50c lower at €12.46 and €10.85.

CRH plummeted 79c to €25.35. Grafton and Kingspan weakened 44c and 35c to €5.68 and €14.45.

Pharmaceutical company Elan dropped dramatically €1.57 to €15.31 as the company’s Tysabri partner Biogen Idec announced it had not received any definitive takeover offers and would remain independent.
