Business ‘Oscars’ night for city firms

BUSINESS leaders across Cork are gearing up for what has been described as the “Oscars” for city centre trading.

Following a record number of nominations this year the winner of the Cork Business of the Year award will be announced tomorrow night at a gala ceremony in Cork’s Silver Springs Hotel.

The awards are organised by the Cork Business Association (CBA) and are now in their fourth year.

The CBA is also this year celebrating its 50th anniversary.

The four quarterly award winners — Cummins Sports, the organising committee of the Cork Jazz Festival, Saville Menswear and the Moderne — will go forward for the finals.

Chairman of the judging committee, James O’Sullivan, said: “This really is the Oscars for Cork city centre trading. We are always looking for more people to get involved and we would encourage city centre traders to nominate other city centre traders they feel deserve the award.”

Mr O’Sullivan said nominations can be received by the CBA in writing and traders can also nominate themselves.

Other members of the judging committee include Cork city manager Joe Gavin, chairman of Examiner Publications Alan Crosbie, former assistant Garda Commissioner Adrian Culligan and trade relations manager with Heineken Ireland John Crowley.
