West Cork farmers share spoils

Marts: Two West Cork livestock farmers shares top awards at a show and sale of store cattle at Bandon Mart yesterday where up to €350 over €/kg was paid for heavy store bullocks.

Jim McSweeney, Kilenavaronagh, Toames, Macroom exhibited the top Continental x bullock and the top Continental x Heifer as well as the second prizewinner in the class. The winner of the heifer class weighed 540kg and sold for €800.

John McCarthy, Kilgroman, Ovens exhibited the winner of the Friesian x bullock class and showed the best Hereford/AA x heifer.

The Friesian winner weighed 597kg and sold for €825 and the Hereford/AA x heifer weighed 486kg and sold for €635.

The highest price was €1,000 paid to Jer Twomey, Barrachauring, Donoughmore for a Beef Breed Cow weighing 845kg

Continental x heifers (SWS Cup) 1. Jim McSweeney, Toames, Macroom. 2. Jim McSweeney. 3. Ger O’Mahony, Letter East, Kilcrohane, Bantry.

Hereford-AA x heifers (John Buckley Cup) 1. John McCarthy, Ballygroman, Ovens. 2. Anthony Deasy, Ballinaloughy, Ballinhassig. 3. Anthony Deasy.

Friesian Cows 1. Ripley Busteed, Cripple Hill, Bandon. 2. Brian Collins, Shanacashel, Kilmichael. 3. Denis Lehane, Bandon.

Beef breed cow 1. Jer Twoomey, Barrachauring, Donoughmore. 2. Kitty Moyles, Greenanes, Ardfield. 3. Una Keohane, Rosscarberry.
