New agricultural association leader

A SENIOR Teagasc executive, Gerry Scully, has been elected president of the Agricultural Science Association (ASA). He takes over from Dr Dermot Ruane of UCD, whose term of office expired in mid-September.

Mr Scully, who is from Flagmount, Co Clare, is programme manager in charge of the Teagasc national rural development programme.

He has held a number of senior positions with Teagasc, including chief sheep adviser, assistant director of advisory services and chief agricultural officer in Galway.

The newly elected vice-president of ASA is Elaine Farrell, a native of Castletownroche, Co Cork, and an executive with the IFA. She is the first woman to hold the position in the 65-year history of the association.
