Major Irish employers such as Apple, Dell, Johnson and Johnson and Microsoft also made the top 100 list, which includes Google, MTV and Starbucks.

The annual list compiled by consultancy firm Interbrand placed Coca-Cola in the top spot, with a brand value of $65m (€47.5m).

The top 10 was rounded out by IBM, General Electric, Toyota, Intel, and Mercedes-Benz.

The top four brands each have a brand value of $50m (€36.5m) or more, according to the annual survey.

The biggest riser in terms of brand value is Google, with a brand value of $17.8m (€13m), placing the search engine firm in 20th position.

Other major risers include 64th ranked fashion store, Zara, 44th ranked Nintendo and 33rd ranked Apple.

The report said Apple was the supreme master of demand creation. It said: “Consumers are now happy to own multiple iPods that are styled for particular functions: home, video or exercising.

“And in a world filled with technology, the expectation created around the launch of the iPhone demonstrates the supreme desirability this brand has created.

“It was unthinkable some years ago that Apple could make a phone. Consumers wouldn’t have given the brand permission to do so. But now Apple can transcend the ‘old thinking’ of limited boundaries. In this sense the brand has become its passport, to roam wherever its proposition can be applied.”

Some of the big fallers in the list include, Ford from 30th to 41st, GAP from 52nd to 61st, and Kodak from 70th to 82nd.

For the first time three insurance companies — AIG, AXA and Allianz appear on the league table.

There are no Irish, Indian or Chinese brands in the top 100 brands list but Japanese brands like Sony, Lexus and Honda all made this year’s table.
