INCREASED efforts are being made to encourage more of the country’s 135,000 farmers to consider going the organic route to meet consumer demands.

Organic farming in Ireland is on the increase although it still forms only a tiny part of agriculture. There are 1,100 organic producers, who farm nearly 40,000 hectares annually.

Bord Bia, with the help of €1.5 million in funding from the Department of Agriculture and Food, has developed a three-year marketing plan for the sector in consultation with the Organic Market Development Group.
