Japanese stocks down

JAPANESE stocks dropped yesterday, led by shares of utility companies including Tokyo Electric Power, as investors judged their recent gains excessive.

Nippon Yusen KK led declines by maritime shipping companies after reporting lower profit.

The Nikkei 225 Stock Average fell 39.98, or 0.2%, to 17,252.34.
