Greencore plans welcomed by Town Chamber

THE proposed €500 million Greencore development at the site of the former Mallow Sugar Factory, which is expected to deliver up to 2,000 jobs, will be a major economic boost to the region, it was predicted yesterday.

Mallow Chamber said an advanced enterprise space of 800,000 sq feet, a four-star conference hotel, a golf course and many recreational amenities are all facilities that it had actively sought over many years and are especially welcomed.

“Given that the proposals do not include any significant shopping facilities, Mallow West will not in any way impact on the town as a retail centre.

“It will, in fact, represent another significant building block in making Mallow an attractive visitor destination and an even better place to live and to work.”

Mallow Chamber said it looks forward to working with Greencore and others to progress the development and to see construction at an early date, so that the many long term benefits will come on stream sooner rather than later.

With reference to the current dispute over redundancy payments to the former sugar company employees, Mallow Chamber said it looks forward to the early resolution of those issues.

“The continuation of the current difficulties is of no benefit to any party,” it said.

Greencore has meanwhile stated that Mallow West is fully serviced for water supply, wastewater disposal and electricity.

This will enable the site to be developed by availing of the services on site and without disruption to the existing town infrastructure.

“This will allow the development to move forward at pace, if adopted, without the necessity to expand or add additional capacity to the current services in place in Mallow,” it said.
