THE State is facing a potential compensation bill of more than €170 million from victims of clinical negligence.

The latest figures from the State Claims Agency (SCA), which manages all legal actions against the Government, reveal that it is handling 1,300 negligence claims from members of the public.

This is an increase on previous years as the agency is now responsible for managing claims from victims of sexual abuse in schools in addition to medical negligence actions that it has been tasked with resolving, for the last five years.
