CRAFT butchers called on Agriculture Minister Mary Coughlan to ensure “beef barons” don’t scoop the €50 million investment package for the beef and lamb processing sector.

Associated Craft Butchers of Ireland (ACBI), which represents small abattoirs and processors as well as retail butchers, said many of its members have already been enquiring how they might benefit from the scheme.

ACBI chief executive Pat Brady said many giant processors in the beef industry compete directly against its members.
