Mart enjoys superb trading

Marts: Heavy continental bullocks were a superb trade at Bandon Mart yesterday where up to €510 over €/kg was paid for choice lots at one of the largest sales of cattle at the centre for some time.

The highest price of €1,250 was paid for a lot of two Charolais bullocks weighing 737kg, while a lot of three Charolais of 686kg sold for €1,105.

Three Continental bullocks weighing 521kg, exhibited by Con O’Sullivan, Roscarberry, winners of the class for Continental x bullocks, sold for €958. Second prizewinners in the class, three bullocks exhibited by Tom Connolly, Kilmichael, weighed 596kg were sold for €960. Jim McSweeney, Tones, Macroom, was third with four bullocks of 575kg which sold for €960.

The prices for winners in the Hereford and Angus bullock class ranged €190-€270 over, while Friesian winners sold for up to €230 over. Continental heifers made up to €250 over, Angus and Hereford selling for up to €190 over.

Best lot of Friesian bullocks — first and second place: John McCarthy, Ovens; third: Niall Murphy, Donoughmore.

Continental Cross Heifers — first place: James O’Mahony, Killcrohane; second: John O’Neill, Clonakilty; third: James O’Mahony, Kilcrohane.

Angus/Hereford heifers — first, second and third: Anthony Deasy, Ballinhassig.

Friesian cows (feeders) — first: Dermot O’Reilly, Whitechurch; second: John O’Neill, Clonakilty; third: Pamela de Haas, Dunmanway.

Beef cows — first and second: Ann Marie Hurley, Newcestown; third: Donal Kelly, Castletownbere.
