FARMERS were urged yesterday to cover their heads while working in the sunshine as a precaution against skin cancer.

IFA Farm Family chairwoman Mary Sherry said that with skin cancer on the increase in Ireland, it is time for farmers to be more careful. Farmers have a much higher incidence of skin cancer than the general population, she said, urging them to keep covered while working outside.

She said farmers are very vulnerable both to the long-term and short-term effects of the sun’s rays.
