20% of workers do not take full holiday leave

Among those that do, 84% bring their laptop on holidays with them, and 25% either phone work to check on work matters while they are away or worry things have gone wrong while they are away.

This is according to a survey of Irish workers by RecruitIreland.com, which found that workers who fail to take their full holiday leave said they are either busy or because it’s “not the done thing in their company”.

One-in-10 workers believe their promotion prospects within the company would be affected if they took their full holiday entitlement.

But workers are showing a change in attitude, according to the survey, with 44% planning on bringing their mobile phone with them on holidays this year compared to 90% last year.

However, 43% of respondents provide their employer with a contact number when on holidays and 31% take work-related calls.

The survey also revealed that over 15% of Irish workers take four holidays a year, although the majority still opt for two weeks at one go and then split their holiday entitlements throughout the rest of the year.

The vast majority of respondents thought that the statutory entitlement to holiday leave was too short but one-in-four were prepared to swap a portion of their salary for greater leave entitlements.
