BANK OF IRELAND is to provide 1,000 fee-free cash machines to the British Post Office network, despite having no plans to introduce free banking here.

The bank said yesterday it had signed a new deal to place ATMs in Post Office branches that will allow customers of all banks and building societies to access their money free of charge.

Over 300 machines will be placed in branches that do not currently offer an ATM service, while another 700 will replace machines that are currently provided by other banks. But the machines will not carry the Bank of Ireland brand.
