Talk the talk

Where are the opportunities for Irish businesses in China?

There is a vast array of opportunities for Irish companies.

In the services sector we are particularly strong in educational services. Other areas like engineering, consultancy, financial services and IT all present good opportunities on an international scale.

In the food industry, beef, pork, dairy and fish sectors all hold potential for further development as do prepared foods. Other industries like pharmaceutical and medical supplies can also feature strongly.

How have trade patterns changed over the last few years?

Irish trade with China has grown dramatically over the last few years. Our exports this year should reach over €830 million, up 37% from 2003. Our imports have increased more dramatically rising almost 45% in the same period to an estimated €3.2 billion.

Export of services has been a growing part.

How big a problem is the language barrier?

From a communication perspective language is not as big a hurdle as might be perceived. English is widely spoken by the educated under-30s.

However, interpreters are essential at all business meetings.

Please tell us about the Ireland China Association conference that’s coming up.

The ICA is hosting a conference entitled China Business Insights, on October 20 in the Berkeley Court Hotel in Dublin. Speakers will cover industries from tourism to property, banking to outsourcing. The Chinese Ambassador Mr Hailin Sha will formally open the conference.
