McGettigan on the move again
Mr McGettigan, who left the Musgraves group last year, took up the chief executive’s post at British firm, the Co-operative Group just three months ago, where he was in charge of their food business.
McGettigan is joining a European retailer, but has not moved to disclose the identity yet. However, there is some speculation that retailing giants Aldi or Lidl are his new employers.
Mr McGettigan said he was saddened to be leaving the Co-operative group.
“During my time heading up food retail I have been struck by the enormous potential of the brand and the commitment of the group’s management team to overcoming the business’s short-term difficulties,” he said in a statement.
He joined the Co-op having headed Musgraves British business, which included Budgens and Londis.
Attempts to contact Mr McGettigan for comment yesterday were unsuccessful.
Prior to leaving Musgraves he was considered by some as a potential successor to Seamus Scally, the Cork firm’s managing director who stepped down last month.
That position went to Chris Martin, the group’s finance director.
