New Macra president named
Mr Honner was elected to the post as Macra’s 29th president yesterday. A member of the Baltinglass/Rathvilly Macra branch, he runs a mixed farming enterprise consisting of dairy beef, sheep and tillage. Since joining Macra in 1988, he has held a number of roles within the organisation. As chairman of the agricultural affairs committee from 2000 to 2002, he was involved in negotiating priority access for young farmers in relation to milk and suckler cow quotas.
Mr Honner’s priorities for his two-year term of office include promoting farm partnerships and share farming, to developing and enhancing the profile of Macra with other organisations, and to seeking priority treatment for rural young people. will be a positive and passionate advocate for rural Ireland,” he said. Mr Honner will take over from Seamus Phelan at the Macra agm on May 10. His presidential opponent in the presidential contest, Tipperary farmer Richard Moloney, ongratulated Mr Honner, and wishing him every success in his new role.
