Mr Bush raised $13.1m (€10.59m) in June, his campaign said in an e-mailed statement.

Senator Kerry’s campaign said he raised more than $32m (€25.87m) last month. At the end of June, Mr Bush had $64.3 million in cash compared with more than $34 million for Mr Kerry.

Both campaigns are due to file fundraising and spending figures to the Federal Election Commission today.

Mr Bush must transfer any surplus cash to the Republican Party after he accepts its nomination September 2 in New York and may be husbanding the cash for party advertising and voter mobilisation drives in the final months of the campaign, said Clyde Wilcox, a professor of government at Georgetown University in Washington.
