British study FSA recommendations

THE recommendations of the FSA (Food Standards Agency) to the British Government on the OTM (Over Thirty Months) animals for the food chain are as anticipated — a phased removal of the ban with testing of animals to be introduced.

The FSA has recommended that OTM animals which were born after August 1, 1996, should be allowed to re-enter the food chain provided they are tested for BSE.

They suggested a reintroduction date of January 1, 2004.

The complete removal of the OTM ban to re-enter the food chain with effect from July 2005 with the continuation of BSE testing is recommended.

The FSA report is being considered by the British Government.

A decision is expected within the next two months.

The outcome will be monitored closely by suppliers of beef to the British market to assess the impact which it will have on import requirements in 2004 and beyond.
