Volkswagen to open China plants

Volkswagen AG, the biggest foreign carmaker in China, said it plans to open three new factories in China, part of its €5.9bn expansion to double production in the world’s third-biggest automotive market.

Europe’s biggest carmaker plans to open a factory in Lingang, near Shanghai, to make as many as 150,000 vehicles a year, said Folker Weissgerber, Volkswagen’s director of production.

It also wants to open two engine plants, including one in the north-eastern city of Dalian, and may sell some of the engines overseas.
